The Ducor Hotel deserted from Monrovia

The Ducor Hotel deserted from Monrovia

The Ducor Hotel was one of the most important hotels not only in Liberia but throughout Africa. Built in 1960 on the highest point of Monrovia, this 5-star hotel has 106 rooms and eight stores.

The first international-class hotel built in Liberia (operated by Intercontinental Hotels), the Ducor Hotel was frequented by politicians, diplomats and businessmen from the continent. It hosts many important meetings between African leaders and its various facilities (French restaurant, swimming pool, tennis courts) have made tourists and professionals from around the world popular.

Ducor Hotel closed in 1989, just before the Charles Taylor coup that led to the first Liberian civil war. The hotel was damaged and looted during the war and its rooms were eventually occupied by locals displaced from many shantytowns of Monrovia. In 2007, the government expelled the squatters and, a year later, it rented the hotel to the Libyan government with the intention of renovating and reopening the Ducor hotel. However, with the fall of the Gaddafi government, these plans were abandoned and Ducor Hotel remains abandoned
